Why VCU EM: VCU EM had the right balance of what I was looking for in a residency program. As a safety net hospital, the patients we have the privilege of treating come from every background and we get trained to care for almost everything and anything. The faculty are supportive and dedicated to teaching, bringing expertise and experience from the different subspecialties of EM and varied practice environments. The culture in the department and hospital at large is collegial and collaborative where everyone is pursuing excellence, but not at the price of being competitive in an aggressive way. Lastly, as a native Virginian, I enjoy being close to family and will benefit from the great reputation of our program when it comes time to apply for jobs/fellowship.

Favorite thing to do in RVA: Any activity the city has to offer (the river, parks, live music, restaurants, and breweries) with my coresidents.

Best kept RVA secret: The cost of living! Training at the coolest mid-sized city on the East coast does not have to break the bank. Also, you are only 2 hours away max from whatever you could want to do (beach, mountains for hiking, the nation’s capital).

Fun fact: Have had the privilege of traveling to more than 15 countries with my family, most recently to Japan!
