Pawan Suri, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine & Internal Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He heads the Division of Observation Medicine, which is a part of the Emergency Department. Under his leadership, the Observation Unit has evolved to be able to manage complex conditions on an expedited timeline while achieving excellent patient outcomes. He started the combined Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine residency program at VCU in 2010 and was the program director till 2023.
Dr. Suri has dedicated his professional life to bedside and didactic clinical teaching.
A recipient of several awards, including the Educational Innovation Award from the VCU School of Medicine, Best Teacher award from the Virginia Commonwealth University Emergency Medicine residency program (2008) and the “Golden Apple Award” for outstanding contribution as a clinical teacher from the University of Michigan Emergency Medicine Residency Program (2002, ‘03, ‘04 and ‘05), he developed a comprehensive curriculum in Observation Medicine and started the first required rotation in Observation Medicine for EM residents in 2008. This rotation has been very well received by residents and medical students. Dr Suri is passionate about teaching and divides his clinical time between the Emergency Department and attending on inpatient Medicine wards, teaching residents and medical students.
Dr. Suri is a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), and the American Medical Association. He is the past Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Observation Section as well as the past Chair of the Dual training section of ACEP.
