How to apply
The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service offered by the Association of American Medical Colleges, which enables all application materials to be transmitted via the Internet. We match 10 residents a year through this process. The dean’s office at your medical school will assist you with the ERAS application process. Paper applications will not be accepted.
VCU also takes two additional residents per year from the Air Force. Air Force applicants apply through the military match process which is outside the civilian ERAS program.

- Minimum of 3 letters of recommendation (ideally four), including at least one recommendation from an emergency physician. Department Standard Letters of Evaluation (SLOE) are desired from each EM rotation, and increase our ability to positively review your application.

- Medical examination scores (USMLE, COMLEX, FLEX, etc.)
The dean’s office at your medical school will process your dean’s letter, transcript and letters of recommendation upon your authorization to release this information to our program. Your United States Medical Licensing Examination scores will be transmitted via the Internet by the National Board of Medical Examiners.
The deadline for application to our residency program is December 1. Applications transmitted after this date will not be considered.
