Emergency Medicine Residency

Our residency program offers residents the opportunity to work and learn in an urban hospital setting surrounded by some of the brightest medical minds in the country. VCU — the only Level 1 trauma center in Central Virginia — provides care for approximately 95,000 patients each year, including 4,000 trauma victims, which allows our residents to develop excellent resuscitation and critical care skills.

Our curriculum relies on educational experiences within the Emergency Department and the various intensive care units. The program also provides focused training in the specialty areas of emergency medicine, including toxicology, emergency medical services, the clinical decision unit and pediatric emergency medicine.

The program’s solid foundation stems from our faculty and staff, who are always there to help our residents reach their full potential as physicians. We seek to instill the highest professional standards in our residents so they may go on to provide top-quality care in hospitals around the country, as well as advance the specialty of emergency medicine through scholarly activity and research.
